About



Dr William Hurst is an Assistant Professor in Data Science at Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands. He has over 60 international publications in the areas of data science, creative technologies, critical infrastructure protection, simulation and 3D graphics. Prior to working at WUR, Dr Hurst was an award-winning Reader (Associate Professor) in Creative Technologies in the Department of Computer Science at Liverpool John Moores University, where he worked for 6 years. His education includes a PGCert (Distinction) in Higher Education, a PhD in Computer Science (scholarship - focusing on Critical Infrastructures), an MSc with Distinction in Web Computing and a BSc (Hons) in Product Design.

Research Focus


Creative Technologies and Multimedia Systems: The recent contributions of my work have focused on creating bespoke collaborative AR/VR applications with industrial partners. In 2017 I received £102,000 grant funding from Innovate UK to investigate the use of creative technologies (such as VR) to support UK businesses in being more productive in the workplace. This research was published in several international conference papers such as ‘Investigations into the Development of a Knowledge Transfer Platform for Business Productivity’, presented at ICIM, 2019 and ‘Developing a Productivity Accelerator Platform to Support UK Businesses in the Industry 4.0 Revolution’, at ICICT, February 2018.

Behavioural Analysis, Information Systems and Smart Cities: I regularly work with datasets and perform data analysis experiments, particularly working with supervised machine learning classification to identify trends in behaviour patterns. I began this area of research during my PhD where I investigated the use of supervised learning for supporting critical infrastructure systems. However, my impact in this research area is most evident within the area of Smart Meter Data Analytics. The research has led to two grants (£100k from the EPSRC and £35k from Innovate UK) and numerous high-quality international publications.

Data Visualisation and Security Applications: This area of research focuses on security challenges and data visualisation. The focus of the work has been in collaboration with Aintree NHS Hospital to develop a density-based classification system that can detect anomalous patterns in electronic patient records. My work in this area has resulted in multiple international publications and two successful grants to a combined value of £4.6k. The hospital has supported the project through providing over 1 million rows of data, which we use for experimentation. Being allowed to work with real-world data such as this is extremely rare.
